Wooden Baby Rattle

Shake it Baby!

Made for my newborn son, this rattle is turned out of a single piece of wood, without any glue or nails to assemble it.

Today there is a strong focus on endocrine disruptors – added chemicals that we are exposed to through eating, breathing and touching. Even more so when it comes to infants, who are more susceptible to chemicals and hormone disruptors. So in the making of this toy, the concept was to make it as natural as possible without screws, nails, paint, glue or other possible contaminants . Nothing but wood.

The result is a wooden rattle made of raw beechwood and nothing else. Beech is ideal because it has a very homogeneous grain structure – it does not splinter or dissolve easily, even when wet, which is very important since it will end up being chewed, sucked and bitten. Furthermore the hardness makes it sturdy and averse to breaking, both of which is important in making a toy for children. Lastly, beech has a pleasant mild smell and taste, and does not contain any toxins, like yew or cedar, for instance.
